Planning for your funeral

When people arranging a funeral know what the person who died wanted, they describe feeling a great sense of relief and consolation at being able to fulfil those wishes.  These wishes do not need to be detailed or complex and simply knowing a preferred flower, music choice or poem is more than enough.  Funeral wishes can be completed separate to, or in conjunction with, purchasing a pre-paid funeral plan.

People who know the funeral wishes then they are arranging a funeral say they have a more positive experience and this will help to promote a sense of control and wellbeing.  This is also supported by the findings of a large research project that we conducted with academics from University of York in 2018.

Pre-Paid Funeral Plans

Pre-paid funeral plans are increasingly popular. They allow you to pay for your funeral in advance and can also be a great way to document your funeral wishes as well.  When supporting people to purchase a pre-paid funeral plan, we work in partnership with Golden Charter and can provide you with a safe and reliable way to plan.

A plan allows you to specify your wishes and pay for the funeral director’s services included in your plan. An Independent Way plan from Golden Charter also includes an allowance towards third party costs. These are essential, non-funeral director services such as the cremation or burial fees, plus the minister or officiant’s fee to perform the service. It is important to be aware that these costs vary depending upon the location of the crematorium and they typically increase in time.  This means that in certain circumstances the allowance may need to be supplemented at the time of the funeral.

The money that you pay is held in a secure trust and will be made available to pay for your funeral when the time comes. The Golden Charter Trust is run by a Board of Trustees, completely independent of Golden Charter. To find out more about the Trust and how it protects customers’ funds, visit  We offer plans from Golden Charter which are available to everyone residing in England, Wales, Scotland or Northern Ireland (excluding Isle of Man and Channel Islands) who are over 18, regardless of age or state of health.

Not everyone feels confident that they know what their options are, or what they would like.  If that is the case then please get in touch because we offer a completely free service to help you understand the difference between expressing your wishes, buying a funeral plan and we can give you the information you need to help you decide what is best for you.

We can help over the phone, via Zoom or in person (if practical) and there is absolutely no obligation to use our services thereafter.  We know that pre-planning for your funeral is really important and are very happy to do anything we can to help.
